Every year I like to take on one wedding for free. I love the idea of being able to help out a couple who want to declare their love for one another, but don’t have the budget for a fancy affair at the Ritz… I try to make it a win-win affait, where I get to try something new or different in exchange for my services.
Last year I was able to share in the wedding of Kadian & Jas - and got some really kick butt images for my portfolio from the firehouse where they got married: http://www.pbase.com/jamisonwexlerphoto/kadianjan
This year I’d like to try something a little different. I currently use expensive high end professional digital bodies, lenses, and lights for all of the weddings I am hired to cover. I want to prove that it’s the photographer that makes the photos, not the tools he/she chooses to use.
So for this year’s free wedding, I will be trading my usual kit for a very basic setup consisting of an entry level Canon Rebel XT, with an 18-55mm kit lens, a $70 50mm portrait lens, and a basic 420ex flash. That’s it.
My goal is to produce stunning images with this humble setup and post my images and feelings here on the blog.
So if you are getting married on one of the following weekends: August 11/12, November 3/4, 17/18, 24/25, don’t have the budget for a professional wedding photographer, and live within 60 miles of my home in Grafton, MA, please contact me at freewedding@jamisonwexler.com. If selected, you will receive 6 hours of photographic coverage, and a CD containing approximately 200-300 color corrected high resolution digital files for you to make your own prints!

This is a kick ass idea! Let me know how this turns out as I’m very interested in your findings. I’m doing something similar, but really just for my benefit - no one gets anything out of it but me. I’ve defined an approach that hopefully will motivate me to learn more about photography and less about how to be a gearhead, does that term apply? This approach is to use less costly gear than I should, kit lens, cheap tele, cheap body, etc and make better images than I have in the past.
Like I said, I’m very interested in following this idea of yours. Its very cool and I’m sure its a great deal for the lucky couple thats picked! Best of luck!

I’ll let you know IF it turns out. So far I’ve not found anyone for the dates that I’m available. A lot of inquiries for dates I’m not available…
I have no doubt about the stuff that you’ll be creating with your kit lens, though, I know it’s going to be top shelf!

Jamie I think this is a great idea and can’t wait to see the results! You’re an amazing photographer and I know you can prove that it’s the photographer and not the gear that makes the images. I love the blog, this is the first time I’ve seen it, it’s a great idea. Thanks again for everything!
